In the years before the town planning operation, made in 1492 (Addizione Erculea), the area where now is this Contrada was divided in many little ones and the most famous among these remained in modern nameplaces as “contrada del Mirasole” – where was settled Ludovico Ariosto’s house – and “contrada del Guazzaduro (della Rosa)”.
We can find here concentrated some buildings considered jewels of Renaissance as Palazzo dei Diamanti built by Giulio D’Este, Prosperi-Sacrati, Mosti, Turchi-Di Bagno and San Benedetto’s Church.
The enterprise of diamond was assumed by Ercole I which modified one coat of arms of Niccolò III.
On this coat of arms is draw one Episcopal ring surrounded by a diamond gripped by two leafs to a red carnation, that took the place of the original Niccolò’s daisy. Ercole, taking this enterprise, wanted to celebrate the power that the Estensi reached thanks to the marriage politics promoted by his own. The Episcopal ring is the symbol of the bond with the Stato Pontificio, that was granted to Niccolò III from Pope Martino V when he named the first as banner of Santa Romana Church. Ercole put this symbol in his personal coat of arms.
